This Crustless Keto Onion Bacon Pie is pure comfort food! A creamy, savory pie that you can enjoy any time of the day.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner, or in-between, I could eat a slice of this pie any time of the day! The combination of flavors and textures is perfect – creamy, speckled with crispy bacon. It’s both savory and sweet thanks to the sautéed onions. And it brings me straight back to good, old Germany!
What is an Onion Bacon Pie?
This pie is known as Zwiebelkuchen in Germany. Variations of this pie or tart are popular in south and east Germany, as well as Switzerland. Germans like to combine this pie with a glass of wine or beer, which is why you can often find Zwiebelkuchen at wine festivals. It is comparable to a French quiche. The filling consists of sautéed onions and fried bacon (or German Speck) mixed with heavy cream and/or sour cream and eggs. The crust can be a pastry crust or a yeast-leavened crust.
How to make this pie keto-friendly?
It’s actually pretty simply to make a low-carb version of Zwiebelkuchen because the filling consists of low-carb, high-fat ingredients like bacon, sour cream, heavy cream, and eggs. I decided to simply make this pie crustless, therefore not having to worry about any carbs coming from a crust. It also makes it so much quicker and easier to prepare!
One slice of this pie has 3 grams of net carbs and only 2 sugars! You can further reduce the carb content by using less onions than I do. I use 14 oz of chopped onions, but even with just 10 oz of onions, the pie will still burst with flavor.
How to eat onion pie!
Enjoy a slice like you would do with any quiche. It tastes great for breakfast or brunch with some tea and also makes a filling afternoon snack. Enjoy it for dinner with fresh vegetables, my homemade fermented pickles, or a spring salad. For more of a German touch, try it with sauerkraut or fried cabbage and bratwurst. If you drink alcohol, white wine like Riesling works great, as does low-carb beer.
Tips for making this crustless pie!
Bacon. If possible, use nitrite-free, uncured bacon. If you don’t have bacon on hand, fry up some diced ham with a bit of grease. In Germany, this pie is made with Speck.
Onions. Sautée the chopped onions in the same frying pan as the bacon. Use the bacon grease for frying for a rich flavor. I use 14 oz of yellow onions, but if you want to further reduce the carbs in this pie, you can lower it to 10 oz of onions.
Spices. I only use a bit of salt and pepper for my pie. Germans also like to add a few caraway seeds, which can help with the digestion of onions.
Baking pan. To make this cake, you will need a 9-inch springform baking pan. In the past, I have used springform pans that were leaky. I have since used this springform pan by Nordic that has a tight sealing and a rim to prevent any spills. It has become my favorite baking pan!
Line the bottom with parchment paper and grease the sides with butter.

Keto Crustless Onion Bacon Pie
- 8 slices bacon diced
- 14 oz onion 400 grams, chopped, about 3-4 medium onions
- 1/2 cup heavy cream 120 ml
- 1/2 cup sour cream 120 grams, full-fat
- 4 large eggs
- salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp butter diced or shaved for topping
- In a frying pan, cook bacon until crispy. Remove bacon and set aside on a piece of paper towel. Leave bacon grease in frying pan.
- Sautéed chopped onions in the same pan until soft and translucent.
- In the meantime, preheat oven to 400 ℉ (205 ℃). Line the bottom of your springform pan with parchment paper. Grease the sides with butter.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs. Add heavy cream and sour cream, as well as salt and pepper, and whisk until smooth. Stir in bacon and onions.
- Pour filling into the prepared springform pan. Add diced or shaved bits of butter over the top. Bake for 35 minutes until top looks golden brown. Let cool down for 5-10 minutes. Run a butter knife between the pie and the pan, and remove springform ring.
