With these Healthy and Fun Keto Lunch Box Ideas you can enjoy a delicious meal and snacks at school, in the office, or on your fieldtrip while staying keto. Perfect for kids and adults!

Packing your own lunch is the way to go for those of us who are eating keto. Finding healthy, low-carb foods is hard enough, but finding them at your school cafeteria or your workplace is a mission impossible. Eating healthy, without spiking your blood glucose levels, should not be so hard. By coming prepared, with foods that look and taste good, you and your children won’t be tempted to accept low-quality, high carb meal options.

I will provide you with everything you need for your keto lunch box: recommendations on which lunchboxes and bottles to get, 5 different lunchbox meal/snack ideas, plus some additional tips (drinks, more snack ideas, and tips for hot/cold foods)!

Let’s pack that healthy keto lunch box!

Let’s begin with the basics – the lunch box. My preferred way of carrying lunch with me is via a bento-style lunch box. These lunchboxes have small compartments that work great to keep foods separated. They also make your meals and snacks more appetizing, which is kind of a big deal. Here are my top 3 lunch containers:

  • Glass Bento-Style Containers. I use these for all of our fieldtrips and for my husband’s work lunches. I love that you can put them in the microwave AND oven, easily clean them, freeze them, and that they are food grade safe/BPA free. However, because they are made out of glass, they are not really suitable for school kids.
  • Plastic Bento-Style Boxes. Plastic works great for kids and school lunches. I like these containers because they are made with BPA-free and food-safe material. They also come in a variety of colors for your child to choose from.
  • Thermos Food Jars. I love these little handy jars. They keep your hot food hot for 5 hours! Perfect for school lunches and come with a variety of fun designs.

Next, let’s look at some bottle options. My favorite for adults are by far YETI. They work great for both hot and cold drinks. Their superior insulation keeps hot drinks warm for hours and I love that you can customize them with designs and texts.

  • YETI drinkware. My husband and I love our YETI Ramblers. We use them mostly for hot drinks (coffee!), but also the occasional cold drink (hello homemade root beer) in the summer. For kids, I recommend the YETI Rambler Jr. 12 oz Kids’ Bottle. It comes with a leak-proof straw cap and can take some bumps and drops! You can have it customize with your child’s name (or other text and design) to make it unique.
  • Thermos Funtainer. Another great option for kids is this thermos straw bottle. It comes in a variety of cool designs that young children will love. It is also cheaper than YETI.

Drink Options!

So you got a bottle, but what to pour in it? An easy and healthy choice would be of course WATER. Other options are coffee (like this Turmeric Butter Coffee), low-carb milk (e.g. almond milk), tea (hot or cold, unsweetened or sweetened with stevia), homemade low-carb lemonade, or how about homemade sugar-free root beer?

Last, but not least, let’s think of bags. Backpacks or bags will do for lunch boxes, but lunch bags have the advantage that they come insulated and can keep food warm or cold for longer periods of time.

  • Freezable Lunch Bag. I love this freezable lunch bag. It works great for both school and office lunches. You can put the entire bag in your freezer to freeze the built-in non-toxic gel. Then in the morning, all you have to do is take it out, insert your lunch box, and done. This will keep foods, like salads and fruits cool longer.
  • YETI Daytrip Lunch Bag. This bag is insulated to keep both warms food warm and cold foods cold. It is on the pricier side, but is a great lunch bag for adults and just right for fieldtrips.

Bonus Tips for healthy and fun keto lunch boxes!

Now that you have seen some combinations for healthy lunch boxes, you are ready to learn about some more secrets for your perfect keto lunch boxes.

Secret # 1: You don’t need to bake and make everything yourself! There are a number of keto snacks and treats on the market that would make a great addition to your lunch box, for cookies to chips and more. While it is nice to add homemade treats to your lunch box, we don’t always have the time or the desire to do so, so don’t think that you must and take a look at my list of Best Keto Snacks To Buy.

Secret # 2: Variety and colors are key. Especially for kids, a variety of foods to chose from, and different colors and textures are important to make food look appealing. I like to add 3 major food groups into my keto lunch boxes (and no, “healthy” whole grains are not one of them): protein and fat, veggies or fruits, and treats. Here are some ideas for each group:

Protein and fat: meat in salads, jerky and smoked sausages, salami and deli meats, tuna, breakfast patties, hardboiled eggs, mozzarella sticks or baked cheese crisps, sliced avocado, Greek yogurt, nuts and seeds, keto granola and nut butters.

Veggies or fruits: Cut up cucumbers, peppers, olives, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, salads, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, or raspberries (frozen berries work great in yogurt).

Treats: Homemade keto cookies or brownies or packaged treats, anything from cookies, granola bars, chocolate chips or chocolate bars.

Secret # 3: Work with leftovers and make double batches! Leftovers work great for lunch boxes. I use leftover chicken breast and steak for salads. Thermos food jars are perfect to keep leftover soups, stews, or casseroles hot for lunch. I also bake in double batches. It doesn’t add more prep time and you can use the extra batch for your lunch box.

Secret # 4: Sauces and dressings add flavor! Add a small container for sauces and dressings that you can use for your salads, meats, or veggies. You can dip your vegetables in keto ranch or dripple some keto maple syrup over your keto pancakes.
