Easy Keto Nutella (without food processor)

You’re not going to believe how easy it is to make your own keto-friendly Nutella! All you need are 4 simple ingredients, a saucepan, and a stovetop. With this recipe, you won’t need a food processor or other fancy kitchen gadgets to whip up about 1.5 cups of irresistible Nutella.

What is Nutella?

Nutella is a chocolate-hazelnut spread produced by the Italian company Ferrero. It is known and loved worldwide. Its three main ingredients are sugar, palm oil, and hazelnuts. It is super creamy and of course chocolatey, makes a delicious bread spread, dip, or baking ingredient.

Is Nutella keto-friendly?

Regular Nutella is anything but keto-friendly. No surprise there, since sugar is the main ingredient. Two tablespoons of Nutella have 22 grams of carbs, 21 (!) of that being sugar. Yes, with two tablespoons alone you can raise your blood sugar significantly!

No worries, though!

How to make keto-friendly Nutella!

To make our low-carb version of this chocolate hazelnut spread, we only need four low-carb ingredients: coconut oil (virgin), olive oil, hazelnut meal (ground hazelnut), and sugar-free chocolate chips. Two tablespoons of our Keto Nutella only have 6 grams of total carbs, only 1 gram being sugar and 4 grams coming from fiber (making 2 grams of net carbs). Not bad, right?

The best part of this recipe is that unlike other keto Nutella recipes that you will find online, this recipe does NOT require a food processor! Instead of grounding whole hazelnuts into a butter (as other recipes do), we will simply use hazelnut meal. This makes this Keto Nutella recipe, the easiest and simples chocolate hazelnut recipe out here!

Here are the 4 recipe steps:

  1. Dry roast hazelnut meal in skillet.
  2. Heat coconut oil and olive oil.
  3. Melt chocolate chips in hot oil.
  4. Stir in roasted hazelnut meal. Done!

Does this low-carb version taste like regular Nutella?

Pretty close! The flavor resembles regular Nutella pretty closely. This keto version is just as chocolatey and has thanks to the roasted hazelnut meal that amazing hazelnut flavor and aroma. The main difference is that our version is not as smooth as regular Nutella. That’s because we use hazelnut meal, instead of smoothly processed hazelnuts.

How to enjoy low-carb Nutella!

You can enjoy this keto-friendly chocolate-hazelnut spread just like any other Nutella. My favorite way is to spread it over a slice of my Keto Rustic Bread! And of course, you can’t beat crêpes filled with Nutella, so make sure to try it with my thin keto pancakes. It also tastes fantastic with homemade keto waffles! Or simply use it as dip for your fresh berries. And whenever, you got a chocolate craving, you can always just enjoy a teaspoon (or two!) of this creamy, homemade Nutella.

Tips for making irresistible, homemade Nutella!

Hazelnut meal. It can be a little tricky finding hazelnut meal (aka ground hazelnuts) in the supermarket. If it’s sold there, it’s usually in very small (and rather expensive) bags. I just buy a 2.2 pound bag on Amazon. The hazelnut meal can be long-term stored in the kitchen cabinet and that way I always have my hazelnuts ready when I crave some Nutella!

I also use the hazelnut meal for my Keto Orange Glazed Pumpkin Cake and my Keto Honey Gingerbread.

Chocolate chips. You need either keto-friendly chocolate chips or chopped up chocolate. I believe for Nutella, milk chocolate works best.

Roasting. The first cooking step is to roast your hazelnuts. Over medium heat, dry-roast (that means without stirring) the hazelnut meal in a skillet while constantly stirring. Once the hazelnuts turn gold-brown and fragrant, take them off heat.

Melting the chocolate. First, heat your oils in a saucepan until the coconut oil is completely melted. Now turn off the heat and add the chocolate chips. Stir until the chocolate is completely melted. Now, you just got to stir in your roasted hazelnut meal and you’re done.

Chilling. After combining all the ingredients, your Nutella will still be quite thin and not yet creamy. Pour the Nutella in glass jars and place them in the fridge until the chocolate spread is cooled down and has thickened to your desired consistency.

Storage. In a sealed glass jar, you can store the Nutella on the counter for about two weeks. You can store it for up to two months in the fridge, but it will turn into a firm texture. So, if you do store it in the fridge, make sure to take it out about 30 minutes before serving for a creamy texture.

  • In a small saucepan over a medium flame, heat and combine coconut oil and olive oil until fully melted. Turn off heat and add chocolate chips. Stir until chocolate is completely melted.
  • Add roasted hazelnut meal to the saucepan and stir until combined. Pour Nutella into glass container or mason jars and chill in refrigerator until thickened (about 1 hour). Enjoy!
